Since 1983, the primary objective of ARCHELON (the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece) has been to protect sea turtles and their habitats in Greece. Through monitoring, scientific research, wildlife rehabilitation, and public awareness programs, ARCHELON works alongside a global network of volunteers to safeguard the Mediterranean marine ecosystem.
Key Conservation Efforts:
- Nesting Habitat Monitoring: Protecting over 100 km of coastline every summer. In 2025, ARCHELON recorded more than 10,000 Loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nests across Greece, including Kyparissia Bay (6,100), Laganas Bay in Zakynthos (2,155), the rest of the Peloponnese (1,560), and Crete (710 nests across Matala/Messara, Chania, and Rethymno).
- Sea Turtle Rescue Center (Glyfada): Established in 1994, it is one of the first specialized rescue and rehabilitation centers in the Mediterranean. The center treats 50–70 injured or sick sea turtles annually, aiming for their successful rehabilitation and release back into the wild.
- Marine Research & Technology: Leading vital international initiatives (such as the LIFE MareNatura project) utilizing satellite transmitters to track turtle migration routes and feeding grounds across the Mediterranean.
- Public Outreach: Educating over 84,000 visitors and 14,000 students each year to raise awareness regarding threats like marine litter and fisheries interactions.
